Miss AME and Miss Independence

Guatemala is about to celebrate it’s 201st Independence day declaring independence from colonial rule of Spain in 1821. This is an incredible time to celebrate and watch cultural traditions that have endured for generations. Traditional dances, marimba music, and so much food and family will be celebrated along with some specific traditions.

To kick this off, 3 of our children’s homes selected and worked with some of the girls to be participants in Miss AME (our ministry association), and Miss independence. Many schools and communities hold these elections, so for a few years now, our staff and team have dove into creating a special event of it for our kids! So much time and effort went into helping the girls find just the right area for them to shine.

There were talents such as reading letters, jumping really high, dancing to baby shark, and more. I loved watching our kind and passionate team go all out mixing culture and traditions with their kids, and gringo friends. They truly are an incredible team and their love for the kids is evident in everything.

In the next week there will be many more celebrations for independence day, and celebrating Mayan culture as well. I love living in this town, and at times like this, even more so!
